Originating high in the Alps of the Mercantour National Park, the Vésubie river winds its way through its namesake gorges, until it joins the Var river (which flows into the Mediterranean just west of Nice airport.
From Nice, heading north towards Digne and Isola 2000 ski fields, you turn right at Plan du Var, into a narrow road that skirts the Vésubie river, with vertical rockwalls towering above and sometimes over the road. Spectacular views guaranteed!
Just a few minutes after the right turn into the Gorges, there is a picnic area to the right. A path leads down to the river, and over a stone bridge, offering beautiful views of the river, and a chance for a refreshing dip should you so wish !
Driving along the D2565 road through the gorges, away from Nice and Plan-du-Var, you will pass through Cros d'Utelle, a tiny hamlet with no shops, just a few provençal houses bordering the road.
St.Jean-la-Rivière is a pictoresque little village, with shops and restaurants.
Just in the centre, where the roads turns sharply right, there is a left turn possible, towards the village of Utelle, and the chapel of Madone d'Utelle, offering spectacular views on the Alps, surrounding hills and all the way to the Mediterranean Sea.
